Shop Notes - April 2025

Shop Notes - April 2025

This month, we're working to bring the hobby of hand line fishing to more people than ever. Between our How to Turn a Handline article in Woodturning Magazine and our annual Utility-Grade sale coming up at the end of the month, April is going to be the most affordable time to get a Daggerfish product (or even make one yourself)!

Big News:

Our "How to Make a Handline" article:

This month, I teamed up with the American Association of Woodturners (AAW) to write an article on how to make a simple solid-wood handline. While this design doesn’t have the built-in storage compartments of the handlines we make in our shop, it’s easier to turn on home equipment and matches the basic dimensions of the Daggerfish handline, so it’s compatible with accessories like the Reel Cover, Handline Sheath, and Snap Sling

How to make a handline article in the AAW magazine

If you’d like to read the full article (which includes a dimension drawing and beginner-friendly step-by-step instructions) you can join the AAW to get access to their back catalogue here: https://www.woodturner.org/Woodturner/Woodturner/AAW-Main-Homepage.aspx

Utility-Grade Sale April 19-27:

Celebrating Earth Day and Arbor Day, April 19-27 will be our annual Utility Grade Sale, which offers our biggest savings of the year on products with minor defects. If you’ve been looking for the most affordable opportunity to get some Daggerfish gear, this is it.

Each product is guaranteed to be fully-functional, with only a small cosmetic blemish. Utility grade products are up to 40% off, and include maple, cherry, and walnut handlines, fly wallets, knife sheaths, and more. Stay subscribed to the email list or follow us on Facebook and Instagram to be alerted when the products go live.

Results from the Customer Survey

Thank you to the over 150 people who filled out our customer survey! Here are some of the highlights:

1. The #1 product people want us to make is a collapsible fishing net.

I'm on it.

This is actually a product I've been thinking about since I started the company, and I'm now working with another small US business to make a collapsible net that can be carried in our Strap Snap system. I won't go into the details right now, but I'm very hopeful that we’ll have this product ready to go before summer.

2. People want more educational videos and content

No problemo. I'm going to work on making more videos and other content that shows more ways to use our gear. In the meantime, we have a library of videos on our YouTube channel and a series of articles on our website detailing how to use all of our products. There's also a very active Facebook group dedicated to exploring and advancing the hobby of handline fishing, where you can share and engage with other handliners.

3. Most respondents bought their gear instead of receiving it as a gift.

This is huge for me. When I first started the company, it was so hard to find the kinds of fishermen who were excited about handlining. This shows that the work we and our customers have done sharing the hobby on YouTube and social media is helping more people find out about hand line fishing. It’s awesome to see this hobby grow!

Field Bag updates

We’re still working on making more Field Bags, and looking to find more local PA sewing manufacturers who can take on the project.
